The Austin Packers boys basketball team has not been lacking in competition this season, facing several ranked teams in both Class 3A and 4A.

Saturday night was no exception when the No. 2-ranked Packers took down Class 2A’s No. 2-ranked Minnehaha Academy, who had wins against Apple Valley, Orono and Stevens Point, Wisconsin this season, 61-59 at St. Thomas Academy.

“This is street cred,” head coach Kris Fadness said.

The score was tied at 59-59 when Tate Hebrink received a three-pointer from Moses Issa which was going to come up short. Hebrink laid in the shot on the impromptu alley-oop with .8 seconds remaining.

It was the cap to a game that saw several Packers show up in various ways, but no less important ways.

With the score tight in the second half, Medi Obang came up clutch when the Packers needed the points.

“Medi Obang made some huge plays,” Fadness said. “The score was 54-53 and Medi pulled up with a corner three to put us up.”

It was an example of how many ways the Packers can hurt a team.

“We’re a good team,” Fadness said. “We’re not just one guy. We got a lot of guys that score.”

Issa led the Packers with 19 points while Duoth Gach kicked in 11 points.
