Contractor dies after fall from ladder

The 27-year-old Blooming Prairie man who fell off a ladder Monday outside a home in Albert Lea died at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester Tuesday night, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Derek Lee Johnson, known for his big heart and his dedication to his family, was working with his father’s company Diamond Paint & Rough at 72408 Grey Fawn Drive.

Johnson was reportedly 20 feet above the ground when the ladder buckled, and he fell.

“He was the nicest guy,” said Lisa Vaith, Johnson’s cousin once removed. “He was. He was just a friend to everybody.”

Johnson worked for his father Kevin all of his working life, and he ran Diamond Properties & Real Estate Services, a realtor side business. He leaves behind his wife, son and another child on the way.

Johnson’s funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.
