The Austin ArtWorks Center, part of the Austin Area Commission for the Arts, will offer an in-depth three-day watercolor class for the first time starting March 6.

“Winter Watercolor: Buildings and Barns, Trees and Snow” runs for three days — March 6, 7 and 8 — from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., providing 18 hours of instruction with Master Teacher Bonnie Broitzman. The class was scheduled in response to requests from AACA members for intermediate and advanced level watercolor instruction.

Bonnie Broitzman grew up on a farm north of Albert Lea and became the first in her family to attend college. Broitzman earned an undergraduate degree in art from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois and then her master’s degree in education from Hamline University in St. Paul.

Broitzman taught K-12 art for many years. After retiring, Broitzman began guiding groups of travelers on art adventures including en plein air painting in Europe and Central America.

Matinees at the Paramount

The Paramount Theatre is bringing back matinees. The $5 Wednesday movies will now be shown at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. March kicks off with 1964 black comedy “Dr. Stangelove” on March 7, a film that satirizes the Cold War fears of a nuclear conflict between the Soviet Union and the United States. The film was directed, produced, and co-written by Stanley Kubrick.

Next, on March 14, classic drama “12 Angry Men” will show. Written by Reginald Rose, the movie centers around jury deliberations of a homicide trial and the concept of reasonable doubt.

Go on a dark fantasy adventure on March 21 with “Labyrinth” (1986), directed by Jim Henson and executive-produced by George Lucas. The story is a quest pitting 15-year-old Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) against Jareth, the Goblin King (David Bowie).

Finally, on March 28, celebrate spring break with Indiana Jones in “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” If you saw this action flick in the theatre when it was released in 1981, it might be time to bring your kids to enjoy this Steven Speilberg classic starring Harrison Ford and Karen Allen.

Taste of Nations

The Austin Area Commission for the Arts is proud to issue a call for entries to the Welcoming Community Exhibit at Taste of Nations 2018.

We are seeking artists and authors to submit    2D or 3D visual art or poems or short stories on a theme of “Welcoming” to be considered for a Welcoming Community Exhibit.

Submissions will be reviewed by a jury. If selected, author/artist will be invited to exhibit at the Taste of Nations event on April 21 at the National Guard Armory. There is no fee to enter or to exhibit. Entries are due March 23.
