Russell Allen Spoors, 34

Spoors was charged with felony second-degree murder on Feb. 23. He allegedly stabbed his mother, Susan Spoors, who died of her wounds on Feb. 22.

Spoors initially claimed she stabbed herself with a 12-inch knife, but allegedly later told police he had stabbed her.

Less than an hour before the stabbing, police had been called to the Spoors residence in the 400 block of Second Avenue Southeast because Susan was concerned he was trying to abuse his medication, which she kept in her bedroom. Police arranged for Susan to stay elsewhere for the night, but she declined, believing he had calmed down and would go to bed.

Police found three knives in the house’s mailbox. One of the knives had blood on it.

Spoors was sentenced to two years of probation on Feb. 16 for fourth-degree assault on emergency medical personnel.

The prosecution will tell the court if they have provided all of the evidence to the defense during the omnibus hearing. The defense will also tell the judge if any pretrial motions will be filed.

The judge will also set the date for the pretrial and the jury trial.
