Letter: It’s time to fix the grain glitch now

Published 8:19 am Friday, March 16, 2018

The new federal tax bill has a major typo called the “grain glitch” that will severely impact the agriculture sector that is so vital here in southern Minnesota.

The mistake in the bill makes it more beneficial for farmers to sell their grain to co-ops rather than private, independent elevators. This is unfair to many hard-working Minnesotans who would be unable to compete with cooperatives because farmers would have no incentive to sell to anyone else. The difference of price will be just too much to do otherwise.

Left unfixed, many local elevators will likely fail, leaving many in the area unemployed … over a typo. The effects would be felt all across the Midwest.

Call Rep. Tim Walz, Sen. Tina Smith, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar and tell them to stand up for our southern Minnesota way of life. Tell them that we need their help to fix this big mistake now. It’s time to fix the the grain glitch.
