Sekouba Kenneh, 19, of Austin was charged on Thursday in Mower County District Court with felony attempted first-degree burglary of an occupied dwelling, felony attempted second-degree burglary and felony criminal damage to property-value reduced over $1,000.

According to the court complaint, officers responded to an attempted burglary call at 7:36 a.m. on Feb. 3 to a residence in the 1100 block of Ninth Avenue Northwest. They spoke with a resident, who said he was asleep when he heard a knock on the door. He looked out his blinds and saw a male walking back to a gray Toyota Corolla with two other males inside. They then got out of the car, so he armed himself with a baseball bat.

Two of the males, later identified as juveniles, came to the front door while the third, later identified as Kenneh, allegedly kicked in the side door. The man said Kenneh ran when he saw the bat and the juveniles also ran away. They got into the Toyota and fled the scene. The man said they were wearing black and had their faces covered.

The side door was cracked and appeared to have a footprint smudge, according to the complaint. The strike plate of the doorframe was also damaged. An officer saw shoeprints in the snow.

The man called police again at 10:04 a.m. because he saw the Toyota near the skate park, according to the complaint. He said one of the juvenile suspects was dropped off in the alleyway near a local bar and the Toyota was heading toward Eighth Street Northeast. He confronted the suspect, who allegedly admitted to being at the residence.

Police then spoke to the juvenile, who said Kenneh drove him and the other juvenile to the residence to buy marijuana, according to the complaint. He allegedly said he and the other juvenile were knocking on the front door when the heard a “big bang” and realized Kenneh had kicked in the side door. He claimed he had no knowledge Kenneh was going to do that.

Officers located the Toyota and initiated a traffic stop in the 400 block of 15th Avenue Northeast, according to the complaint. Kenneh was driving and the other juvenile was in the passenger seat. An officer noted that the treads on Kenneh’s shoes allegedly looked similar to the prints found in the snow near the kicked in door. The second juvenile told police Kenneh said he was going by the house to “pick up a friend” and that he heard a “banging noise” and saw Kenneh running from the side door.

Kenneh denied kicking in the door.

Police received an estimate that the cost of replacing the door would be $1,113.

Kenneh will appear in court again on April 16.
