Alleged drunk driver damages light pole

A woman was taken into custody after allegedly striking a light pole with her van while drunk.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, police responded to an accident at 7:40 p.m. on Thursday at Fourth Avenue Northeast near City Hall. A van was on the boulevard after striking a light pole.

The driver, Laura Ann Tjomsland, 67, of Austin, smelled of alcohol and was arrested after failing a preliminary breath test, according to Krueger.

Police spoke to several individuals who heard the accident and said they saw the van on the boulevard and the light pole knocked over.

Tjomsland was booked into the Mower County Jail on a charge of gross misdemeanor third-degree DWI. She provided a breath sample, which allegedly showed her blood alcohol concentration was over twice the legal limit.

The case has been forwarded to the city attorney for review.
