HAYFIELD – The Hayfield baseball team ran into a couple of rough patches as it was swept by Goodhue by scores of 6-4 and 6-3 in a pair of five-inning contests in Hayfield Monday.
The Wildcats (3-3 overall, 3-3 HVL) scored five runs in a second inning that saw them draw four walks in the first game. Goodhue scored two runs off two Hayfield errors in the bottom of the first inning of the second game after the Vikings couldn’t score a run in the top of the first, despite having the bases loaded with no outs.
“We keep hitting that bad inning,” Hayfield head coach Kasey Krekling said. “We’re young, but we’ve got to stop the floodgates and keep the other team from scoring multiple runs.”
Hayfield (1-4 overall, 1-4 HVL) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second inning of the nightcap when Zach Nelson and Kolby Tapp drew bases loaded walks, but the Wildcats scored three runs in the bottom of the second in a frame that saw them draw four walks.
Mason Tapp had a big day at the plate as he went four-for-four with a double and two RBIs.
“Mason had a real good time hitting in the cage before the season and it was good for it to translate into the game today,” Krekling said.
