Jarred Salisbury, 16, has the greatest summer job a teenager in Austin could find.

He’s managing his grandfather’s new business along a frontage road near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and 10th Drive Southeast, Jerry’s Card Room.

The business is owned by Jerry Salisbury, Sr., a sports legend in Austin as former umpire in softball leagues and a director of the Austin Youth Baseball Association.

Jarred is the son of Salisbury and Jennifer Murphy. He will be a junior at Austin High School.

“We opened the business May 1,” the teen said. “We feature sports cards, action figures and card playing.

“We’ve attracted a lot of people. Business has been good so far,” he said. “We’ve had card players and card collectors come into the store.”

The business location has been a wig shop and more recently a Hispanic clothing store.

If location matters, the business occupies one of the best. Traffic from U.S. Highway 218 South turns onto Mower County CSAH No. 45, which becomes 10th Drive Southeast. A brightly-painted sign identifies the location.

There is no other business like it in Austin.

Inside on a recent afternoon, four men are playing cards at a table in the rear of the room.

The manager takes his place behind the display counter.

Baseball is king in the store. Cards, cards and more cards. Action figures, too. Commemoratives and more fill the display cases and shelves.

Some of the cards are from the collections held by grandfather Jerry Salisbury, Sr., and Jarred.

“I’ve been collecting cards since I was about six years,” Jarred said. “It’s my favorite sport.”

Jarred has in his personal collection a rare Kirby Puckett, Minnesota Twins rookie card that he considers his favorite of them all.

Customers can purchase complete sets of Topps and other card manufacturers or buy one-of-a-kind single cards in protective plastic cases.

Jerry’s Card Room has already attracted its regulars, who enjoy playing rummy and cinch. They pay by the hour to play their favorite card games.

Jarred tends to his business inside whenever needed.

During slow times, he practices his second-favorite sport: skateboarding in the parking lot.

Baseball cards, skateboarding and a pay check. It’s a summertime combination that can’t be beat. Especially, when grandpa is his boss.

Jerry’s Card Room is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week.
