A second omnibus hearing was scheduled in the Russell Allen Spoors murder case for July 9 on Monday in Mower County District Court. The purpose of the omnibus hearing will be to determine the evidence in the case, including any testimony and evidence seized at the time of the arrest.

Russell Allen Spoors, 34

Spoors, 34, of Austin was charged with felony second-degree murder-with intent-not premeditated on Feb. 23 for allegedly stabbing his mother, Susan, who died from her wounds on Feb. 22 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin.

Spoors initially claimed she stabbed herself with a 12-inch knife, but allegedly later told police he had stabbed her, according to court records.

The court complaint states that less than an hour before the incident, police had been called to the Spoors residence in the 400 block of Second Avenue Southeast because Susan was concerned Russell was trying to abuse his medication, which she kept in her bedroom. Police arranged for Susan to stay elsewhere for the night, but she declined, believing he had calmed down and would go to bed.

Police allegedly found three knives, one of which allegedly had blood on it, in the home’s mailbox.

Spoors was sentenced to two years of probation on Feb. 16 for fourth-degree assault on emergency medical personnel.
