Gerald Nicholas Grimley, 88

Gerald Nicholas Grimley, 88, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, May 19, 2018, at the Cedars of Austin Assisted Living.

Jerry was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Austin to Edwin and Sarah (Connelly) Grimley. He grew up in Austin and graduated from St. Augustine High School. Jerry was a member of the National Guard Unit Company H and was called to duty in 1951 and sent to Korea.

On June 10, 1950, he was united in marriage to Margaret Perl at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin. To this union, four children were born. The couple made their home in Austin. Jerry worked for Hormel for 38 years until his retirement.

Jerry was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church, American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216. He served on the school board at Queen of Angels and coached seventh grade boys basketball. He loved watching sports, especially the Minnesota Lynx. He enjoyed woodworking, playing with his grandchildren and looked forward to having a beer each week with his close friend and brother-in-law, Don Mandt.

Survivors include his children, Gayle Knutson, Austin, Greg (Sherri) Grimley, Brownsdale, Minnesota, Mark (Debra) Grimley, Lake City, Minnesota, and Michele (Jim) Headington, Mankato, Minnesota; grandchildren, Rebecca Grimley, Bryan Grimley, Matthew Grimley, Elliot Grimley, Lynn Headington and Kelly Headington; great-grandchildren, Micah Peterson and Keira Grimley; and sister, Joan (John) O’Rourke, Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margaret; five brothers; and one sister.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 25, 2018, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church with Father Raul Silva officiating. Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, at Mayer Funeral Home, where there will be a 6:45 p.m. prayer service, and also one hour before the service on Friday at the church. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post 91 and VFW Post 1216. Condolences may be left online at www.mayerfh.com.
