The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa was was our most recent visit with our travelers.
This stop is recognized as the premier institution preserving Czech and Slovak heritage in the United States. Recovering after a major flood in 2008, the new facility now houses over 50,000 square feet which overlooks the Ceder River in this historic stop.
During this stop the annual Houby Days celebration was help with venders of many kinds and several chances to buy the well-known kolaches. Houby, which is a morel-type mushroom, were on sale.
Young Czech dancers entertained with their traditional dance accompanied by Czech music.
A traditional Czech meal suited our palates well, including a variety of kolaches. Afterwards we learned about the history of Czech heritage. A beautiful collection of bead work was on display, including their beautiful clothing, costumes, wall hangings and many large displays. This is a trip with special interest for those planning to visit Czechoslovakia and Prague.
