The Austin VFW Post 1216 baseball team was able to sweep a doubleheader from Albert Lea as it won the first game 8-7 and it took the nightcap 8-1 in Marcusen Park Wednesday.

The first game was tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Tony Ciola knocked in the go-ahead run for Post 1216 (3-1 overall, 2-0 District). Austin led 8-3 going into the top of the seventh when AL scored four runs. Teyghan Hovland walked two in relief, but he was able to pick up the save when he forced a pop out with the bases loaded to end the game.

“It’s always good to pick up a District win [in the first game],” Austin head coach Joe Ciola said. “Obviously we have things we need to work on and clean up on, but the bottom line is we got the win.”

Jed Nelson pitched four scoreless innings to get the win in the non-district nightcap and Austin jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

While the season is young, Ciola is learning what his team is capable of and he likes the group he has.

“We’re finding out how much depth we have,” Ciola said. “The kids did a great job in the second game. It’s a lot of fun getting to know a lot of knew kids and we have a full roster. We’re going to compete and I look forward to the season.”
