A LeRoy man faces a felony charge of receiving stolen property after he allegedly bought a TV taken from his former place of business.

Jack Anthony Kegg, 42, was charged with the single count on Wednesday. He has been summoned to appear in Mower County court on June 10.

The theft in question occurred in early January at the Cedar River Country Club in Adams, where a manager said a 42-inch, $1,500 TV had gone missing. Two doors were broken during the theft, causing roughly $350 in damage, but whipping winds and fresh snow covered up any potential tracks.

On April 25, the manager called authorities after getting a tip that Kegg, who had worked at the golf course as a mechanic from 2009 to early 2010, had bought the appliance for $500 at a pawn shop, according to a criminal complaint.

Authorities interviewed Kegg, who initially said he made the purchase at a Rochester pawn shop. But, after being told his purchase would be verified by investigators, Kegg relented and said he had in fact bought the TV from a man named “Crackhead” at a Kwik Trip in Rochester, the complaint states.

Kegg said he “halfway” wondered if the appliance was stolen, but was willing to “look the other way” because it was such a good deal.

Kegg said he had learned that “Crackhead” had a TV for sale and agreed to meet him at the convenience store during a weekend in March, the complaint states. He said “Crackhead” was a skinny, white male, standing about 5-feet-8-inches tall, with scruffy hair and a beard. No true name for “Crackhead” was provided.

Authorities recovered the stolen TV from Kegg’s residence, confirming it was the missing appliance by checking the serial number. According to the complaint, Kegg wouldn’t admit he knew the television had been stolen but added, “I didn’t wanna know; it was a good deal.”
