Mower County 4-H team places third in state competition

Mower County 4-H placed third in the fourth annual Minnesota 4-H Science of Agriculture competition on June 21.
The competition challenges 4-H youth to work together to identify agriculture-related issues in their communities and to work with local experts to devise real solutions for issues using scientific and engineering principles. Teams of three to five participants in grades 6-12 work with volunteer coaches on their projects.
This year’s Mower County 4-H team consisted of Megan Silbaugh, Sarah Hecimovich, Hannah Hecimovich, Ryan VanPelt and Kaitlyn Meiergerd.
Their project focused on building awareness of lamb as a source of meat. They received a check for $500.
The first place team, from Beltrami County, did a project on promoting and understanding genetically-modified organisms through youth education. The second place team, from Le Sueur County, did a project on improving nitrate testing and mitigation in local waters.
