Richard Dale Orshek, 92

Dick graduated from Cedar Rapids High School and the University of Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic during World War II in Burma and China and was part of a convoy that drove the reopened Burma Road in 1945. Dick started work at Hormel right out of college and worked there until his retirement, almost 40 years later. His love of sales and Hormel was a perfect match.

Dick’s greatest joys were his wife, children, the two Jims, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. He was a member of the Austin Country Club for over 50 years. He and Beverly were longtime members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin.

Dick’s strong sense of family was at the heart of who he was. His children and grandchildren came to Austin frequently, including every Thanksgiving and Christmas. As the family grew, it meant larger celebrations and more fun in Austin. Dick’s passions included golf, reading, jazz music, cooking, the Nebraska Cornhusker football program, breakfast with his buddies and going out with friends on Friday night.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Beverly; and by his parents, Lavina and Arthur Orshek of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. He is survived by his two daughters, Kathy (Jim) Zils of Libertyville, Illinois, and Lynne (Jim) Crist of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Jon Zils, Sarah O’Connell (John), Kate Shannon (Chris), Amy Crist and Jeff Crist (Ashley); and five great-grandchildren, Addy and Mia O’Connell, Madeline and Colin Shannon and Hailey Crist.

A service for the family and Dick’s Austin friends is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, 2018, in the chapel of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be preferred and appreciated, sent to Lambs Farm, 14245 W Rockland Road, Libertyville, IL 60048.
