ArtWorks Festival reaches new exhibitor high

Sixty-seven.

The 19th prime number. The atomic number of holmium. The number of counties in Florida. Buddy Arrington’s NASCAR car number. And the number of exhibiting artists coming to the Austin ArtWorks Festival later this month.

This is a 20 percent increase over 2017 and a record number in the seven-year history of the event. The majority — 47 — are Minnesota-based with the balance from eight other states: Iowa, Wisconsin, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Tennessee and Florida.

All artists were invited to exhibit after completing an application process which involved a brief biography, description of materials and techniques used in creating artwork, a list of honors and awards and images of artwork.

The applications were reviewed by three jurors, all artists, and scored based on quality, originality and impact. Invitations were then issued based on the jury scores.

Austin Area Arts uses this rigorous process to insure the highest-quality art is exhibited at the Austin ArtWorks Festival.

The majority — 60 percent — of the artists are returning, having exhibited at Austin ArtWorks Festival in the past. Twenty-seven are first-time ArtWorks exhibitors. Eight of the exhibitors currently offer work for sale in the Austin ArtWorks Center retail space.

Exhibitors represent 16 media: ceramics, glass, jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, sculpture, textile, wood, digital media, drawing, print making, stone, basket weaving, illustration and rug weaving.

Photographer Thomas Keller will exhibit in 2018. He is the only artist who has exhibited at every Austin ArtWorks Festival since the event began in 2012. Among the exhibitors are one past Featured Artist, Angie Pipkorn and two past Purchase Award winners, Scot Schmidt and Tonja Ihlenfeldt.
