Izaak Walton League announces Game and Fish Building fair programs; Nature Center, Cedar River Longbeards among exhibitors

Austin Chapter 10 of the Izaak Walton League announced the exhibitors and programs being held in the Game and Fish Building during the 2018 Mower County Fair.
Exhibitors will include Austin Chapter 10 of the Izaak Walton League, Mower County Soil and Water Conservation District, Jay C. Hormel Nature Center, Mower County Pheasants and Habitat Forever and the National Wild Turkey Federation – Cedar River Longbeards Chapter.
The new “Prairie Patio” will be available for visitors to tour starting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, through Friday, Aug. 10. It will be a guided tour of the wildflowers and rain gardens around the Game and Fish Building. Tours will meet at the south entrance of the building.
The Mower County Soil and Water Conservation District booth will conduct demonstrations on Wednesday, Aug. 8, on watershed hydraulics, water testing kits and water sampling using Secchi tubes to illustrate the turbidity from local streams.
The Jay C. Hormel Nature Center will be giving the following presentations at the Game and Fish Building:
• Monarch Magic, 4-7 pm. on Wednesday, Aug. 8 – learn about the journey from egg to butterfly with living examples from Maria Anderson;
• All About Bees, 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9 – learn about the Nature Center’s resident bees and the hive-to-bottle program from Will Bjorndal; and
• Let’s Hear it for Herps, 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10 – meet the Nature Center’s live, cold-blooded animals with Luke Reese.
The Cedar River Longbeards will be holding a youth wild turkey calling contest at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10. Those interested should meet on the east side of the Game and Fish Building at 6 p.m.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Waterville Fisheries Division will also be bringing area fish on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
