Approximately 400 American Legion Riders will arrive on Aug. 21-22 at American Legion Post 91 in Austin as part of the 1,100 mile, five-state journey raising awareness about the American Legion Legacy Scholarship and the important work Legionnaires are doing in the local community.

Since the scholarship’s inception in 2002, over $13 million has been raised for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship. The American Legion Riders have generated several million dollars for the scholarship through the American Legion Legacy Run and are also engaged in countless other charitable activities that contribute thousands of dollars annually to other national, state and local programs and charities for veterans, military families and communities.

The American Legion Legacy Run is one of the largest multi-state, multi-day, cross-country motorcycle events in the United States, with many of the American Legion Riders traveling from across the country to join together in unified support for this great cause.

Mayor Tom Stiehm issued a proclamation declaring Aug. 21-22 as “The American Legion Legacy Run Days” during the council’s regular meeting Monday evening.

American Legion Post 91 and Spam Post 570 will welcome the American Legion Legacy Run as they arrive at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21.  They will host a hog roast at 6 p.m. at American Legion Post 91, beginning with a short ceremony followed by dinner and entertainment.

The local American Legion posts will be presenting checks to the national representative for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship. The money was raised through a series of fundraisers, including food sales and silent auctions.

The following morning, American Legion National Commander Denise Rohan will join the American Legion Legacy Run for a wreath-laying ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery before leading them on the next leg to Rochester.

American Legion Post 91 and Spam Post 570 invite the entire community to participate in the wreath-laying ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery to honor those who have served and, in particular, Jay C. Hormel for his involvement in establishing the American Legion and both Post 91 and Spam Post 570 here in Austin.

Eligibility for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship is open to children of service members who died while on active duty following Sept. 11, 2001, as well as children of post-9/11 veterans who have been assigned a combined disability rating by the Department of Veterans Affairs of 50 percent or greater.
