Revisiting tiny memories

Sixty-three years ago, twin brothers LaVerne and Vernon Hoffman and sisters Norma and Margaret Calkins were married in the Kehret Wayside Chapel.

Saturday afternoon, at the Mower County Fair, the couples returned to visit the tiny chapel.

“We’ll go to the fair and stop and sometimes we’ll drive by,” said Norma, seated in front of her husband LaVerne before the front of the chapel. “The grandkids were even here once.”

As many in Austin know, the chapel itself seems like a tiny toy replica of larger churches, but it comes filled to the brim with memories.

The Hoffmans were from Dexter in those days while their wives were from Grand Meadow.

When the couples were married on Aug. 7, 1955, the chapel was located outside of Austin. It had just enough room for the couples, the preacher and his wife and family members. It was cramped.

Friday, as the couples enjoyed some time with family and friends, it really came down to one thing.

“This brings back a lot of memories,” Margaret said.
