The Austin Police Department is looking for Jose Luis Renteria, 33, of Austin after he allegedly led officers on a pursuit throughout the city on Sunday morning.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, an officer attempted to pull over a white Honda for a traffic violation at 1:55 a.m. near Fourth Street and First Avenue Northwest. The driver was non-compliant, but pulled over when the officer turned on the squad car’s emergency lights. The officer decided to wait for backup, but the Honda took off 15 seconds later.

Krueger said the officer chased the Honda throughout the northwest and southwest sections of Austin. During that time, the Honda went through stop signs and other officers joined the pursuit. The chase then entered the northeast and the Honda pulled over in the 1200 block of Ninth Street Northeast. The driver, who police recognized as Renteria, got out of the vehicle and got on the ground as officers shouted orders. When he heard the K9 barking, Renteria said he was not going to “get bit,” got up, entered the Honda and took off.

Officers again pursued Renteria through the northeast section of Austin, Krueger said. Renteria stopped again near Ninth Street and 12th Avenue Northeast and slightly opened his door a few times before taking off again, driving through three yards on 12th Avenue Northeast.

Kruger said officers employed stop sticks, puncturing two of the Honda’s tires, as the chase approached East Oakland Avenue. Renteria drove the Honda through yards in the 1800 block of East Oakland Avenue, striking a chain link fence and two clothesline poles before coming to a stop at 2:14 a.m. Renteria then fled on foot and was able to escape.

Krueger described the condition of the Honda as “undrivable” and said officers noticed wrong plates were on the car.

Renteria has prior convictions for felony drug and assault charges.
