Patricia Ann Burke, 92, formerly of Austin, Minnesota, died Monday morning, Sept. 3, 2018, at the Muse Norris Inpatient Unit at the Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City, Iowa.
Pat was born March 5, 1926, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Roy and Louise (Lilly) McCormack. Pat grew up and attended school in Hagersville, Ontario. She worked at Marshall Fields on State Street in Chicago, and Tobin’s in Fort Dodge. She lived a life of love. Pat loved her husband, Martin, deeply, her four children, her church, her friends, family, and community. She was a stay-at-home mom for over 30 years. As an active member of St. Edwards Catholic Church, Pat was involved in many ministries including Care Ministry, RCIA, Eucharistic Ministry, Hospitality Ministry, and Marriage Preparation. Pat volunteered many hours in the Austin community working with Crops, Meals on Wheels, Grey Ladies, foster mom to many, storyteller host, Girl Scout leader, and volunteer and chairwoman for the Philomathian Store for a number of years. In Fort Dodge, Pat was council president of the Monica Mothers, and she worked with Cub Scouts and hosted an exchange student from Bolivia. On April 14, 1951, Pat married the love of her life and best friend, Martin Victor Burke, in Fort Dodge. They enjoyed 60 wonderful years together.
She is survived by three children, Dan (Amy) Burke of Arlington Heights, Illinois, (Bob Burns) of Clear Lake, Iowa, Liz (Lee) DeBeau of North Fondulac, Wisconsin, and Peter Burke (Angela Strange) of Winona, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Rochelle) McCormack of Marshalltown, Iowa; one sister, Mary Lou (Neal) Sharp of Plainfield, Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy McCormack of Austin, and Marvel McCormack of Fort Dodge; and two brothers-in-law, Burton Odell and David Burke, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Louise McCormack; husband, Martin; daughter, Martha Burns; three brothers, Jack, Bill, and Jim McCormack; three sisters-in-law, Barb Odell, Marty McCormack and Rose Burke; and one great-grandson, Jordan McKibben.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Austin, with Pat’s nephew, Father Kevin O’Dell, officiating. Visitation will be held from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8, at St. Edwards in Austin. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. A meal for friends and family will be held in the St. Edwards Family Room following the interment.
