Hulne: Recent sacrifices have paid off for the Packers

The Austin boys soccer team has picked up this steam over the past two weeks and a lot of it is due to the fact that the Packers are playing a selfless brand of soccer.

After some early speed bumps, the Packers have picked up three straight shutout wins over Faribault, Worthington and Owatonna — who have a combined record of 28-6.

The Packers (9-2 overall) are back in the hunt for their second straight Big Nine title and the team has hopes of making another big postseason run after that. The Packers have now won six games in a row after the team had dropped back-to-back games for the first time in at least three years.

Austin has gotten back on track by making simple sacrifices. The Packers are loaded with a roster where all ten starters could probably put up 10 goals in a season if they really wanted to. But the Packers are focused on something greater than individual glory — they’re after team success.

To stay successful, Austin will have to play the way it has the past weeks. Defenders will have to stay back, midfielders will have to control possession and forwards will have to attack and find the best shot.

If Austin stays in its system and stays humble, the Packers could be in for another big year.

Austin will be the host of the Section 1A tournament semifinals and finals this season and if the Packers get a top-seed, they won’t have to leave Art Hass Stadium in their quest to get back to the Minnesota Class A State Tournament, where the Packers finished in third place last year.
