Man allegedly strangles woman for trying to remove his bandana; Also charged with possession of ammunition

Edwin Alfredo Altamirano, 26, of Austin was charged on Wednesday morning in Mower County District Court with felony domestic assault, felony domestic assault by strangulation and felony violent felon in possession of firearm ammunition.

According to the court complaint, an officer met with a woman on Sept. 19 at the Mower County Law Enforcement Center. The woman reported that Altamirano had strangled her the day before at her residence in the 1000 block of First Avenue Northwest.
She said Altamirano pushed her after she tried to remove a bandana he was wearing around his neck, then began to strangle her with both hands, the complaint states. She said she believed she was going to “pass out” and “die.” She also alleged that he punched her several times in the face, leaving her with blood in her nose, before leaving the house.
She advised police that Altamirano was a predatory offender who had listed her residence as his home, even though he did not live there, the complaint states. She also said Altamirano often carried a black handgun in the front of his pants.
Police went to the woman’s residence at 1:53 p.m. on Monday to follow up on Altamirano because they believed he was out of compliance with Predatory Offender Registration (POR) statutes, the complaint states. They found Altamirano at the residence with the woman and asked him about his whereabouts and the domestic assault report. Altamirano said they had “false information.” Police then asked about a phone that Altamirano had been using (he had “no phone” listed on his previous change of information form) and Altamirano said he did not have to list it because it belonged to the woman.
Police then contacted Altamirano’s probation officer, who said she wanted to search the residence as part of his probation conditions, the complaint said. During the search, police asked if he had any weapons or drugs. Altamirano admitted to having ammunition and retrieved a box containing 27 rounds of 9mm ammunition. The ammunition was seized and Altamirano was arrested.
A review of Altamirano’s criminal history shows a prior conviction for domestic assault, giving a false name to a peace officer, possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia, predatory offender knowingly violating registration requirements and a juvenile disposition for criminal sexual conduct.
Altamirano will appear in court again on Oct. 29.
