Naomi Elizabeth Schuurman, 3 months

Naomi Elizabeth Schuurman was welcomed into her family on July 3, 2018, just a little bit shy of being born on July 4. She was the tiebreaker of the six Schuurman children and was adored completely by all of her brothers and sisters and, of course, parents. She was a little fighter from the beginning as she was faced with numerous health challenges. She proved to be a strong infant that went through several medical procedures to try to get her on a path to recovery.  She was only able to be at home with her family for a total of 13 days. The rest of her time on earth she stayed under the loving care of the care teams at Sanford NICU, Mott’s in Ann Arbor, and finally she was given loving care at the Sanford Castle in Sioux Falls. To all the specialists, doctors, nurses and staff that loved her, cared for her, and were there for her at these locations, we are eternally grateful.

Naomi was baptized in the Faith on Sept. 5, 2018, during a private baptism at the Sanford NICU by the Chaplin of her dad’s fire department.

In her short time with us, Naomi was able to teach everyone around her a great deal about love, acceptance, patience, and being strong. Naomi was always able to look deep into a loved ones soul as she made eye contact. She will be missed by all of her friends and family who came to know her.

Naomi is survived by her daddy and mommy, Arend and Susan; her older sisters, Hannah, Rebekah and Abigail; her older brothers, Matthew, Samuel and Noah; her grandparents, Sylvia Schuurman and John and Pattie Weldon; and the wonderful support and love of her community of Elkton and countless friends and family. Blessed be her memory.

A service celebrating Naomi’s life will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, in the north gymnasium of the Elkton School in Elkton, South Dakota. A committal service will be held at the Elkton City Cemetery following the service. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on, Friday, Oct. 26, 2018, at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Elkton, South Dakota. In lieu of flowers, we would ask that a donation to either the Down Syndrome Diagnosis Network or the Children’s Miracle Network be considered.
