One of our most popular artists is Tammy Rice. Tammy creates jewelry and accessories from reclaimed materials with a focus on upcycling bike inner tubes. Her designs are fun and unexpected. Look for earrings, necklaces, bracelets using recycled Spam tabs as closures, purses, belts, wallets and more.

One-of-a-kind lamps by Mike Ankeny sell quickly at the ArtWorks Center. Each lamp is different, incorporating salvage materials like an outboard boat motor, a coffee grinder, a whetstone or machine gears.

Connie Ryks hand weaves baskets with pine needles that she collects and dyes herself. Many of the baskets incorporate other natural materials like shells, antler or geodes.

Bird lovers and wine lovers are charmed by John Bridley’s birdhouses, which are made entirely of wine corks.

If reclaimed wood is your sweet spot, check out coasters and music boxes by Aaron Johnson. Artist Melinda Wolf makes earrings and necklaces from reclaimed wood scraps from her husband’s wood shop. Barn Bridge Hill Salvage Art is based on reclaimed painted wood, often trim boards, with recycled tin cut and collaged on with succulents a favorite theme.

Another angle on going green: consider gifting experiences to your loved ones. You could get tickets to a show at the Paramount Theatre. It’s a December to Remember with five holiday shows and four movies (details at www.austinareaarts.org/december-to-remember/).

Film fest

World War I Armistice Centennial (1918-2018) Film Fest features four full-length films for a free will offering on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Paramount Theatre.

The festival starts with family-friendly “Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero” at 11 a.m. At 12:45 a.m., documentary “Pershing’s Path to Glory” traces the story of a leading World War I American general.

View the documentary about the first women to serve in the U.S. Army at 3 p.m. with “The Hello Girls.” Finally, documentary “The Millionaires’ Unit,” about privileged Yale students who formed a private air militia, will play at 4:30 p.m. American Legion Spam Post 570 and Post 91, VFW Post 1216, Austin’s DAV and Beyond the Yellow Ribbon chapters, with support from The US World War One Centennial Commission, present this event.
