ST. PAUL, Minn. — Police say a motorist accused of crashing his SUV through the front gate of the Minnesota governor’s residence in St. Paul has been jailed.

State Patrol Lt. Gordon Shank says nobody was injured in the incident around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Shank says the vehicle, driven by a 59-year-old Center City man, came to a stop in the driveway. He was ordered out of the vehicle and arrested without incident.

Gov. Mark Dayton was home at the time. Spokesman Matt Swenson says the 71-year-old governor was never in danger.

The driver is being held on suspicion of criminal damage to property, pending formal charges.

A similar incident occurred in 2016, when a St. Paul man rammed his car into the front gate, saying he wanted to speak with the governor.
