The National Weather Service has upgraded its winter weather advisory from Friday to a winter storm warning for the area. It will go into affect 10 a.m. on this morning and will extend until noon on Sunday.
The warning includes Mower, Dodge, Olmsted and Winona Counties.
According to the NWS, a mix of precipitation will spread into the area starting Saturday morning. There could be a mix of precipitation at the onset as the precipitation moves in from the south, but mainly snow is expected across southern Minnesota into west central and north central Wisconsin.
Several inches of snow are expected by Saturday evening, with the highest totals generally across southeast Minnesota. The winds will also increase with gusts reaching as high as 30 or 40 mph at times and could cause some drifting at times, especially in open areas.
Accumulations of 5 to 8 inches of snow and ice accumulations of around one tenth of an inch are expected.
Icing could occur with the wintry mix, with accumulations up to 1/10 of an inch possible, especially Saturday morning. Untreated roads and sidewalks could become very slippery.
Travel will be impacted, and the NWS warns to be prepared for slippery to hazardous driving conditions.
