Austin man arrested after found in stolen vehicle

Austin police recovered a reported stolen car after a Wednesday call of a suspicious vehicle.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Krueger, police were called at 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday about a suspicious vehicle in the 200 block of Fifth Street Southwest.

Police arrived and located David Allen Pennig, 57, of Austin sitting in a silver 2004 Audi with Minnesota license plate 646WLR. Pennig told police he was waiting for a friend.

Police ran the plates, which came back as reported stolen out of Washington County, Krueger said. Pennig was then arrested.

Police searched the vehicle and allegedly found a plastic bag sitting on the driver’s seat. They tested the contents of the bag, which came back positive as methamphetamine.

The vehicle was taken to the Mower County Law Enforcement Center and pol ice contacted the registered owner.

Pennig is at the Mower County Jail awaiting possible charges of fifth-degree drug possession and vehicle theft, both felonies.
