Charles Edgar Huston, 92, of Austin, Minnesota, died Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.
Charles Edgar Huston was born Nov. 17, 1926, on the family homestead near Lyle, Minnesota, to Charles and Emma Huston. The fourth of five children, Charles attended the local country school and then Lyle High School until the eighth grade. At the age of 17, he went to work for the Hormel Company. At age 19, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served until the end of the war. He was honorably discharged Dec. 13, 1946, and returned to work at Hormel, where he remained until his retirement at the end of the strike in 1986. On Oct. 20, 1951, Charles was united in marriage to Margaret Cafourek at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Austin, and she blessed him with three children.
Charles loved fishing and hunting, especially pheasant hunting. He enjoyed his large garden and was especially proud of his rhubarb patch and his apple, plum and pear trees. He liked to travel, but never wanted to stay gone for too long as he thought he always had to get back and mow the lawn. He was an active member of the VFW and American Legion Color Guard for over 45 years. He was a good union man and enjoyed visiting old friends in rest homes in the local area.
Survivors include his son, Lynn (Bev) Huston; daughter, Sheila (Gary) Dickman; daughter, Brenda (Orin) Krause; grandchildren, David (Marlene LeBarron) Huston, Jenni (Scott) Van Benschoten, Gabe Dickman, Michael (Laura Seid) Dickman, Angela Bailey and Nathan Bailey; and 14 great-grandchildren.
