The Lyle/Pacelli baseball team ran into a worst case scenario in their first round 1A West subsection game against Hayfield as they lost 10-0 in five innings at Riverland Complex Thursday.

The Vikings (8-11 overall) scored four runs in the first inning off of a single by Derek Petersen that scored three and left Petersen on third due to an error on the outfield by L/P (10-6 overall). Petersen scored on a wild pitch.

“Our outfield is better than that. They had a hard time out there,” L/P head coach Steve Baumann said. “Getting down four right off the bat, that hurt us. It definitely takes it’s toll. We tried to come back, but we just didn’t hit well. We weren’t ready to play today I guess. Because we’re a lot better team than what we showed.”

While Hayfield came storming out of the gates, their junior pitcher Ben Pollock held L/P hitless for four and two-thirds of an inning. Josh Stadheim had a bloop-single in right field in the fifth inning for the Athletics only hit.

“The wind slowed down my pitches a little, but my curve ball was breaking,” Pollock said. “They’ve got some good hitters but I was just hitting spots and staying consistent.”

After seizing the early led, the Vikings chipped away, scoring two runs in the second third and fifth innings. The game ended on a two-run single by Steve Serratore in the fifth with one out.

“We knew once we got on them early, we’d have them,” said Hayfield freshman third baseman Tyler Krekling, who went 2-of-3 with 2 RBIs.

Hayfield head coach Craig Selk said even though Pollock was not his team’s top pitcher, he wasn’t surprised by his performance.

“MacEagon Voyce is obviously our ace, but other than that we go 2, 3, 4, 5 and they all can throw,” he said. “We only have 13 players, but all of those guys can pitch. We’re sitting pretty well for a tournament like this.”

The fourth-seeded Vikings will take on No. 1 Southland at Riverland Thursday at 5 p.m.

Selk knows the Rebels well as he plays with four of their players on the Austin Athletics amateur baseball team.

“I know a lot about them,” Selk said. “It’ll be fun and we’re looking forward to a good game.”

The fifth-seeded Athletics will play No. 8 Kenyon/Wanamingo at 5 p.m. at Riverland.
