Brownsdale Study Club

The Brownsdale Study Club met March 20, at the Brownsdale Community Center with Shelley Vogel hosting.

Vice President Sharon Willis brought the meeting to order with the reading of the Collect. The minutes and treasurer’s reports were read. Nine members answered roll call by naming a famous friend or relative.

There was no old business. New business: There was a discussion on starting an official list to keep Brownsdale area residents interested in joining the study club. A motion was made, seconded and passed to adjourn the meeting.

Ida Foster gave the outside reading about birds of spring that people have photographed. These included burrowing owls, tree swallows, bluebirds, and western tanager. At the Green Cay Wetlands in Florida, a roseate spoonbill was photographed, as well as prairie chickens of Northern Minnesota.

Beryl Sprung presented the main topic on Cranberry Country in the wetlands of Wisconsin. Every autumn, cranberries are harvested from 18,000 acres of Wisconsin wetlands. Cranberries grow on perennial vines. At harvest time, they are knocked off the vines and the bed is flooded with water. Since the berries float, they can be corralled and gathered.

A snack of cake was enjoyed by all.
