No injuries were reported, though an unknown number of chickens were killed, after a semi truck caught fire early Thursday morning.
According to Mower County Sheriff Steve Sandvik, Mower County Deputies responded to a report of a semi truck on fire at about 2:50 a.m. on Thursday at the intersection of 770th Avenue and 180th Street in Mower County, a few miles west of Ostrander. They were advised the semi was completely engulfed in flames.
The driver said he was transporting live chickens when he heard a popping sound and noticed flames coming from the trailer. He then pulled over and ran from the vehicle.
The Grand Meadow Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. Gregerson Towing and Recovery hauled the truck from the scene.
The truck was owned by Prairie’s Best Farms Inc. There is no damage estimate at this time; however, the truck is a total loss.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
