A fire at a 14th Avenue Northeast home late Monday night caused “significant” damage, though the 69-year-old homeowner escaped without injury, according to Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp.
Philipp said law enforcement and fire officials responded to 408 14th Ave. N.E. around 11:15 p.m. The police report said authorities observed flames inside the house from a window on the northwest corner of the residence.
The homeowner, Harold Reed, was standing outside with several “old-fashioned” fuses and a flashlight, Philipp said. He told authorities that he’d attempted several times to changes fuses in his basement after lights in a couple rooms stopped working, according to Philipp. The fuses repeatedly blew out, he said.
Philipp stated that when Reed returned upstairs, he noticed smoke and fire. He was later given a room at the Day’s Inn.
Investigations into the source continue.
