Austin will be placed in a winter weather advisory ahead of the early spring storm beginning to barrel it’s way through the midwest.

According to the National Weather Service, official start of the advisory will be 10 p.m. tonight and will stretch through to 10 a.m. Thursday.

While Austin is looking like it will dodge the worst of the storm, which could dump as much as a foot of snow in some places in Minnesota, the area is likely to see a wintery mix with ice accumulations of 1/10th to 2/10th of an inch, impacting travel.

According to Mower County Sheriff Steve Sandvik, non emergency travel was not recommended as visibility was down to just one-eighth of a mile. In Lyle, the school announced an early closing of 12:30 p.m.  Riverland Community College will close all campuses at 2 p.m.
