April brings many promises — spring weather, flowers, singing birds, and outdoor activities.

There are many things to celebrate during April and the Hormel Historic Home embraces two great causes this month. Not only is it Autism Awareness Month, but it is also designated as National Volunteer month. The HHH relies on volunteers to make our organization run smoothly and our programs to be successful. A variety of people, possibly you included, have been a volunteer tour guide, an event supporter, a gardener or a decorator here, and I hope you know how much you are appreciated.

There are many instances in history of various Hormel family members serving as volunteers within the community. George Hormel served as a volunteer firefighter and was a member of the Water, Power, and Light Board. Lillian volunteered in a variety of musical roles in her church. Jay served in World War I and in the local American Legion. Herman was a member of the Board of Elders at the Presbyterian Church for nearly 50 years and sang in the choir for 25 years. Both John and Ben served as officers for Austin’s Tennis Club and were active in their churches. Lizzie shared her artistic talent with the community by teaching painting classes and starting the Art and Travel Club.

I can’t possibly recognize all the people who currently share their talents with the HHH in this article. For that reason I will use code names to highlight those who share their time with us.

Our History for Half Pints programming is largely due to the vision and passion of Volunteer Z. She has written four unique tours that appeal to and educate kids from ages two and over. She has led every Woodson and Pacelli kindergartner on a specially designed tour this year as well as all the Banfield 1st graders. She also had the idea for and has led our Music In Motion programs.

Many of our volunteers help with setting up, serving, and cleaning up after special events. Volunteer D helps frequently with History Happy Hour refreshments and Volunteer A makes people feel comfortable through offering water and coffee and handing out flyers at concert events. Volunteer D2 often helps with event check ins.

Our autism programming employs highly trained staff but also welcomes volunteers to help plan and execute events. Contributors J and S share their passion for serving those with autism through attending monthly advisory meetings. They are willing to offer ideas and work at various events to raise awareness for those on the spectrum.

Volunteers G, A, J1-4, E, and W help share our history and Volunteers D3, M, S, L, P, F, B and the rest of the alphabet bring too many talents to list. New things can happen and old things can be revived when people share their gifts. Please be in touch if you want to join my alphabet list of volunteers.

Stepping Out for Austim Walk — Be an autism superhero

1-3 p.m. Sunday, April 14

Join us as we celebrate and fundraise for ASD programming, rain or shine. Register by Thursday, April 4, to guarantee your t-shirt. $15 for adults and $10 for children. Entertainment by The Baron of Bubble. Lunch sponsored by Pizza Ranch. Prizes for creative costuming and fundraising provided by the Holiday Inn.
