It’s been a good season for Austin High School students.

Several AHS SkillsUSA members competed in the 51st annual SkillsUSA Championship in Bloomington from April 12-14. Two students won medals from the competition, including: Juli Durate who took second place in the job skills demonstration and Beatrice Moore, who took third in extemporaneous speaking.

“These students are demonstrating more than just their skills; they are proving that our workforce is prepared to lead the way in every technical area (that) our country needs to maintain a strong global economic presence,” said Mark Linderman, MN SkillsUSA executive board chairman. “CTE is learning that works for America, and we are very proud of this talented group of students who are true champions dedicated to excellence in their trades.”

The SkillsUSA Championship is a showcase for career and technical education students. This year, more than 800 students competed in 75 hands-on trade, technical and leadership contests.

During the competition, students worked against the clock and each other, proving their expertise in occupations such as electronics, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, automotive service, medical assisting and culinary arts.

All contests were run with the help of industry experts, trade associations and labor organizations and test competencies were set by professional industry standards.
