State enters 100 deadliest days on Minnesota roads

Memorial Day through Labor Day marks the 100 deadliest days on Minnesota roads.
According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety (DPS-OTS), 124 motorists were killed in Minnesota during last year’s 100 deadliest days period. That accounted for 33 percent of all traffic fatalities on Minnesota roads in 2018.
Of those 124 fatalities, the four primary causes were:
- Drunk driving – 36
- Speeding – 30
- Not wearing a seat belt – 18
- Distracted driving – 9
Preliminary numbers by the DPS-OTS show 107 fatalities on Minnesota roads in 2019 compared with 112 this time last year.
Law enforcement throughout the state is currently conducting extra seatbelt enforcement until June 2. There will be extra enforcement periods for speeding from June 18 through July 21 and drunk driving for Aug. 16 to Sept. 2.
