The Austin City Council will hold a public hearing regarding the revocation of the hard liquor on-sale, Sunday hard liquor on-sale and food licenses for Hiawatha Bar owner Karena Tufte during its next regular meeting on Monday.
According to City Clerk Ann Kasel, the Minnesota Department of Health informed the city that the Hiawatha Bar no longer held a state food and beverage license. Under state law, businesses cannot have hard liquor on-sale, Sunday hard liquor on-sale and food licenses without a state food and beverage license.
In response, the council suspended Tufte’s hard liquor on-sale, Sunday hard liquor on-sale and food licenses on June 3. Kasel requested the council hold a revocation hearing at its next regular meeting,
Tufte has been informed of the hearing and will be granted the opportunity to address the council.
The council will also vote on changes in the liquor ordinance that clears up conflicting language about serving alcohol on public property during a community festival or event held in the city.
Kasel will discuss an ordinance concerning small vehicle passenger services during the council’s work session following the meeting. The ordinance comes in response to the rapid growth of transportation network companies like Uber and Lyft. The language added to the ordinance would make it compliant for transportation network companies.
Planning and Zoning Administrator Holly Wallace will also discuss a proposed vacant building registration ordinance during the work session.
The council’s next regular meeting will be held on Monday, June 17, in the Council Chambers located in the basement of City Hall. The work session will take place in the conference room across the hall immediately following the meeting.
