Police are advising people to be aware about leaving children and pets in cars during the summer after a child had to be rescued from a locked car over the weekend.

According to Austin Police Chief David McKichan, police received a call at 7:44 p.m. on Saturday regarding a toddler who had entered a vehicle and locked the door in the 1100 block of Third Avenue Northwest. The report indicated the keys were in the vehicle, prompting the child’s parents to immediately call police.

Police were unable to unlock the door, forcing officers to break the window to get the child out, McKichan said.

The report indicated the child was in the car for about 20 minutes.

McKichan said the child’s parents are not at fault and acted appropriately in the situation.

McKichan said children should never be left in a vehicle during warm weather, regardless of how briefly, as the interior of the vehicle is often hotter than the outside temperature. He also advised to leave pets at home.
