Austin man injured after bike struck by squad car

An Austin man was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries after his bicycle was struck by a vehicle early Tuesday morning.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol accident report, a 2018 Ford Explorer, which Austin Police Chief David McKichan confirmed was an Austin Police squad car, was at a stop sign facing northbound on Second Street Northeast in Austin. It was turning east onto Fourth Avenue Northeast when it collided with a bicycle traveling west on the eastbound shoulder of traffic on Fourth Avenue Northeast.
The accident occurred at about 1:06 a.m. Tuesday. The Austin Police Department and Mayo Ambulance responded to the scene.
The bicyclist, Randall Bernard Nelson, 56, of Austin was transported to Mayo Clinic Health System-Austin with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Ford Explorer, Nathan Mark Curtiss, 32, of Albert Lea was uninjured.
The report indicated road conditions were wet at the time. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
The report also indicated Nelson was not wearing a helmet.
