With Homecoming Week in full swing, the Austin Police Department is reminding participants to be respectful and mindful of other people’s property while celebrating.

Austin Police Chief David McKichan does not advise toilet papering property, saying that while there is a degree of acceptance for it, not all homeowners are okay with it. He said that if confronted by a homeowner while toilet papering a property, individuals involved should be apologetic and cleanup.

McKichan does not advise fleeing.

“If you’re doing something where you believe you need to ‘get away,’ you’re doing something wrong,” he said.

McKichan said the APD has also received complaints from homeowners of high schoolers using products that have caused damage to property, including syrup, superglue, eggs and animal urine.

“When you use these products, the police get involved and a lot of good feelings about Homecoming go away,” he said.

McKichan warned that those caught using items that damage property can be subject to juvenile citations. If those caught are 18 or older, they can be subject to adult citations.

McKichan also said that high schoolers should be aware of their surroundings, particularly at night, after a 17-year-old male was struck in the left leg by a vehicle at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday while a group of high schoolers were out toilet papering. McKichan said police reported seeing about 25 high schoolers in and around the roadway. The male struck by the car was uninjured, but police attributed the accident to confusion due to the large number of high schoolers present.
