Police were called to the fairgrounds Saturday in southwest Austin, where the boy were attempting to break into the historic log school house.

Mother strikes child

An Austin Police Department officer on routine patrol came upon a mother repeatedly seen striking a child.

The incident occurred near 10 p.m. Saturday in the 100 block of First Street SE.

The officer pulled the driver over and questioned an adult woman, who admitted striking a son, age 12, in the backseat of her car.

The parent said she and her two children "had been fighting all day."

She admitted she had over-reacted by striking the preteen with a chopping motion of her hand to the face. The mother said she had struck the children "only two or three times," according to the officer's report.

The victim and a sibling also in the rear seat of the car confirmed their mother's account.

The officer noticed no visible injuries to the child and the parent and her children were allowed to proceed on their way.

The report will be turned over to the Mower County Department of Human Services' child protection services unit.
