Extra police security was provided on Monday at Ellis Middle School after the school and law enforcement became aware of what Austin Police Chief David McKichan called a “non-specific threat” over the weekend.
“Over the weekend the district was made aware of a social media post that contained a threat related to Ellis Middle School,” Austin Public Schools Human Resources Director Mark Raymond said in a Monday afternoon press release. “The threat was reported to local law enforcement and was investigated. Local law enforcement found the threat to be unsubstantiated.”
In a Sunday Portal message sent out to parents, Ellis Middle School Principal Jessica Cabeen said, “Law enforcement was notified and is working with the district. School district personnel have met and have responded to the situation according to procedure.”
McKichan stated the threat involved a firearm, but would not give additional details.
As part of the increased security measures, students had to enter a single entrance where all bags could be checked. Additional officers were provided to assist the school resource officer.
“The safety and security of our students and staff is of the utmost importance to the district,” Raymond said.
“We take (these threats) very seriously and I know the school does too,” McKichan said. “People should always let police know about such threats.”
