Greyhounds roll over Rochester

ROCHESTER -- Austin does not mind playing Rochester when there's nothing more on the line than pride, especially when the Greyhounds come away with a win.

The sixth-ranked 'Hounds ended a brief three-game losing skid at the right time, ripping the host Rochester Royals 9-5 Wednesday night in a non-Southern Minny League game at Mayo Field.

"That's why we play them in so many games because it's a good game," said Greyhounds manager John Frein. "They're one of the better teams in the state, it's always fun to play those good teams."

The Greyhounds kept their streak alive against the ninth-ranked Royals, who have fallen victim to Austin each of the last five meetings -- including once at last year's Class B State Tournament. Royals starter Joe Siple lasted just four innings as Austin's offense came out swinging.

Back-to-back doubles by Nick Rohne and Tim Kaplan accounted for the Greyhounds' run in the top of the first inning, and RBI-doubles by Craig Selk and Mitch Mullenbach plated three of Austin's four third-inning runs. Matt Raso added an RBI-single to make it a 5-0 'Hounds lead.

Rochester rallied up three runs off Greyhounds starter Tate Cummins, but a 4-6-3 double play and an outfield assist from Rohne caught a speedy Joey Duda trying to score on a single to center off the bat of Royals manager Jeff Milene.

Cummins atoned for one of the runs he allowed by knocking the ball out of the park for his second home run of the season. Siple got the final out of the inning but did not come out for the fifth and eventually suffered his second loss of the season to the Greyhounds.

Cummins surrendered a solo run in the fifth on a Dave Adams home run, and Rohne helped the cause with a four-inning relief stint for the save. The only run he allowed was a solo homer by Tim Gerlesberger.

The Greyhounds gave themselves three runs worth of insurance in the sixth, helped out by one of the Royals' three errors. Grant Lunning led off with a single and Frein's sacrifice bunt was dropped at first. Cummins delivered a both runners home with a triple to center field. Rohne added the final RBI with a sacrifice fly.

Austin, now 16-9 overall, plays its next two games on the road. The 'Hounds travel to Wisconsin for a clash with the Eau Claire Cavaliers on Tuesday, July 8, and the Albert Lea Colonels entertain Austin on Wednesday night. Both games are at 7:30 p.m.
