Business opens new doors to its customers

The interior of Doors and Floors looks more like one of its installation projects than a showroom.
But that's to be expected in a quick turnaround to build and move into a new building in less than two months.
The new Doors and Floors location opened June 23 across the street from its old location, next to Jim's Supervalu. Supervalu announced earlier this year it would need the space Doors and Floors was renting to expand.
Owners Joel Jensen and Gordy Handeland are renting a new 50-by 80-foot building from property owner Ardis Nelson on 11th Street NE.
"I think it's good," said Sue Waldee, the office manager at Doors and Floors for 13 years. "I think it's good move. The showroom can be set up how we choose to."
The showroom is indeed larger. The store will be able to offer a larger selection of carpets, flooring, windows and doors. Presently, the showroom is being carpeted and soon more displays will be put in place for customers to peruse.
"It'll be a pretty nice building once we get it going," Jensen said.
Doors and Floors opened in 1990 in Austin and in 1991 in Albert Lea. Owners Jensen and Handeland saw a need for the business in the community. The first store was opened downtown.
On Memorial Day 1996, the store moved to 102 11th St. SE, renting space from Jim Baldus, owner of Jim's Supervalu. In the spring, Baldus told them he wanted to expand.
"I guess we kinda knew that Jim was sometime going to expand," Jensen said.
Jensen and Handeland looked for a new location, finding one across the street at 101 11th St. SE.
"(Customers) think it's great," Jensen said.
Doors and Floors offers selections of carpet, vinyl, ceramic and laminate flooring, blinds, doors and windows. The store also installs the products. About 60 to 70 percent of their business is in flooring, Jensen said.
Jensen jokes that some days, there's nothing he likes about his job.
But he enjoys "just to be around people, meet people," he said.
Doors and Floors is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and Friday and open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday. For information call 433-3420.
