Since May 19, several people have taken the steps to run for public office, including two veteran Austin civic servants in Steve King and Jeff Austin, who have stepped up to run for mayor.
We are thrilled to see people making the move to serve their community as well as Mower County. It shows us, as well as those living within our area, that there are people that have a vested interest in making their communities better in whatever way they can.
We are also thrilled to see newcomers who wish to take part in the process, which gives rise to fresh faces and fresh ideas.
These people who have come forward and those that will come forward as we get closer to the June 2 filing deadline are examples of people who wish to have their voices heard and become part of the process.
But these are only the most visible right now and through the end of the year, as we elect people to positions across the country, its worth reminding people to take part in the process and ensure your voice is heard.
Simply bickering back and forth on social media platforms will accomplish nothing. Get out, take part in the forums. Listen to the candidates, ask them questions. This is as much your time as it is their time. They will be making decisions based on what is best for the community. You are that community.
Make your voice heard.
