Several local teams were in action Monday at the Section 1A, Sub-Section 2 Tournament at Maple Valley Golf and Country Club in Stewartville.
On the girls' side, Lyle/Pacelli's Sammi Jones captured the individual crown and advanced to sectional play, where she will be joined by Cathy Schneider and Charlotte Retterath of Southland/Grand Meadow. The Blooming Prairie team will also be moving on after a tiebreak win over Lanesboro.
The top team and five individuals, not including those from the team qualifier, move on to the Section 1A tournament. The Section 1A meet is next Tuesday, May 27, at Mount Frontenac in Lake City.
Jones was a state qualifier as a sophomore but missed out on advancing to the Class A meet last year after placing seventh in a strong section.
For the boys, S/GM won the team title, while Steven Busho and Scott Krejci of BP will represent the Blossoms at sections.
Jones had little trouble with the rest of the field, shooting an 83 to beat her nearest competitor, Michelle Lawstuen of Lanesboro, by 10 strokes. That was the highlight of the day for L/P however, who finished in fifth as a team.
The Blooming girls' team put together a consistent effort top-to-bottom, led by Calla Swenson's 99. They found themselves in a tie with Lanesboro at 421, but Missy Johnson's 112 from the fifth slot proved to be the difference for the Blossoms. Lanesboro's fifth scorer shot a 128.
S/GM finished third on the afternoon thanks to a fourth-place finish from Schneider and a fifth-place showing by Retterath. Both golfers will be advancing as individuals to sectional play.
The S/GM boys' team showed why its 5-5 conference record is deceiving, capturing the sub-section title by seven strokes over Lanesboro. Bryan Peck continued his stellar play of late with a 76, good for a share of second place. He got some help from Brady Lorenzen, who shot an 80 to finish fourth overall. Senior Gary Kiefer shot a front-nine 38 as part of his 84, which tied him for eighth.
The BP boys' team finished in a tie with Stewartville for third, although Busho and Krejci will both be moving on. Busho tied Peck with a 76 of his own for second, while Krejci was sixth with an 83.
L/P got a pair of 85's from Kyle and Tyler Fett, who ended the afternoon tied for 10th. As a team, they shot a 349 to tie with LeRoy-Ostrander for fifth overall.
L/O was paced by a 91 from Nick Norby.
