The Hayfield/Austin Athletics Class C amateur baseball team got a number of prolific pitching performances in starting the season 2-0 in two league games over the weekend.
Former Riverland Community College standout Sean Breslin allowed one earned run in seven innings of Saturday’s 4-3, 12-inning affair at Byron, and former Austin Greyhounds ace Chris Pack pitched four shutout innings of one-hit ball in Sunday’s 15-3 rout of Lake City in Hayfield.
Pack also tossed the final 1 2/3 innings Saturday night and started strong on Sunday for wins in both Twin Rivers League games.
Nick Bowe’s bases loaded sacrifice fly scored Matt Juncker in the 12th inning as the game-winning run Saturday night in Byron. Juncker singled to lead off the frame and moved up with walks to team manager Joe Serratore and Todd Walerak before Bowe floated a fly ball to center.
Pack sealed the deal by shutting down the first-year club from Byron in the final at-bat.
Serratore struck out four, walked one and gave up one hit in his 3 1/3 innings in relief. Breslin struck out nine in seven innings, allowing only five hits.
Bowe had two hits to lead the Hayfield/Austin squad.
Stomping Lake City
The Athletics showed that they intend to be more than pitching by pounding out 13 hits in Sunday’s 15-3, seven-inning victory over Lake City at the Hayfield High School diamond.
Juncker, Breslin and Al Dahlen all went 2-for-3 to lead the Athletics to the run-rule shortened victory.
Juncker had three RBIs as the designated hitter for Pack, who allowed only one hit in his four innings of work.
Pack struck out seven and walked none to go to 2-0.
Jay Wetzel got touched up for four consecutive singles for all three Lake City (1-3) runs during his relief stint in the sixth.
The A’s got the lead back up to double-digits with five runs in the bottom half, which saw 11 batters come to the plate.
Jon Severson went 2-2 with an RBI in a pinch-hitting role in the inning, and Matt Johnson had an RBI-single as well.
The Athletics are stacked with pitching this season and intend to improve upon last year’s 15-21 record.
They host the St. Charles Sting tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Marcusen Park in Twin Rivers League play.
