The Hayfield Heat cooled off in a 6-4 loss in 11 innings to New Richland in an amateur baseball game at Marcusen Park Thursday.

New Richland took the lead for good in the 11th when it strung together three straight singles to score one and it added another run on a Hayfield throwing error.

The Heat (5-4 overall) had led 4-2 going into the eighth but New Richland scored on a throwing error in the eighth and it tied the game in ninth on an infield single.

Hayfield had five errors in the loss.

“We’re at the point of the year where we have a different lineup every night,” Hayfield first baseman Craig Selk said. “We’ve got a different shortstop and a different second baseman every game and it’s tough.”

Hayfield scored all four of its runs in the third when Tyler Krekling doubled in a run and scored on a sacrifice fly by Selk to tie the game at two. Darin Wagner made it 4-2 with a two-run homer over the right field fence with two outs.

Hayfield’s offense never got going again as some of its younger players struggled with wood bats.

“It’s a huge difference between metal and wood,” Selk said. “It’s a completely different swing and it’s always better to start with wood and go to metal.”
